Introduction To Creative Writing
Keen to turn your hand to creative writing but need a little guidance and inspiration?
This workshop introduces fundamental techniques related to crafting engaging, character-driven prose in both fiction and memoir. Topics include tapping ideas for plot, better understanding characters, working with scenes, manipulating structure, achieving verisimilitude (believability), and feeding theme. Whether you’re a beginner writer, or just need a “refresher” class, you’re sure to come away with the knowledge, skills and confidence required to kick-start your creative work.

Investigate ideas for kickstarting plot
Develop brainstorming techniques to deepen characterisation
Better understand the difference between “scenes” and “narrative summary”
Improve understanding of narrative structure types

Format
This is a hybrid workshop with a focus on craft; it will be held in-person at Kurilpa Room at Common Ground in South Brisbane and live streamed simultaneously to an online audience. It is a level 1 course for writers of all levels.
About Eileen:
Dr Eileen Herbert-Goodall is a published writer of fiction and nonfiction. As a sessional academic, Eileen teaches creative writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast and Swinburne University. She also regularly presents for the Queensland Writers Centre. Eileen is the author of the 2017 novella 'The Sherbrooke Brothers'. Her second novella is due for release later in 2022. Eileen has been an Executive Committee Member with the Australasian Association of Writing Programs, the peak academic body representing the discipline of creative writing in Australasia, since 2019.
