Submit:

• a completed draft non-fiction article between 750–950 words, or

• a brief article pitch plus previously published writing sample of approx. 750–950 words.

Submissions of completed draft articles accepted via email at editor@qldwriters.org.au from Tuesday 27 October – Friday 6 November 2026 will be considered for publication in WQ 295 (December 2026). Pitches are accepted during the same period but will be considered primarily for later editions.

Submit as an unrestricted Word document (.docx). Suggested formatting:

• 12pt Times New Roman or Arial font

• Double line spacing

• 1” or 3cm margins on an A4 page

• Include page numbers

Please include a short author biography (40–50 words).

Article submissions are encouraged but not required to address the issue theme of In Motion: 

• The writer’s life is often comprised of movable and moving parts: balancing works-in-progress and shifting between forms, deadlines, writing time, the day job, and the commitment to iteration, development and lifelong learning that the craft of writing entails. In this issue, we ask how writers maintain momentum and remain in motion – and just maybe find a certain poetry in the process.

Pitches and submissions are accepted from all current QWC members.

 Writers should submit their own original, unpublished work, and hold all requisite rights to enter any contractual arrangements offered as part of publication in WQ. 

WQ does not accept submissions of work created in whole or in part with the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI). 

If accepted for publication, the writer grants QWC the exclusive right to publish the work for an initial term of six months from the date of publication (or up to twelve months from date of signed Contributor’s Agreement). QWC may retain the non-exclusive right to produce, publish and promote the work beyond this date. Further terms are negotiated in the Contributor’s Agreement issued upon acceptance for publication.

Copyright in the work remains with the writer at all times. All rights not licensed to QWC are reserved to the writer.  

QWC pays accepted writers an honorarium of $150 per published contribution.

Where there is Indigenous content or participation in the work, Entrants should comply with Creative Australia’s Protocols for using First Nations Intellectual and Cultural Property.

Writers will be personally notified of the outcome of their submission.

Please note that feedback cannot be provided on unsuccessful submissions and no correspondence can be entered into regarding the outcome of submissions.

QWC does not guarantee the publication of any work pitched or submitted to WQ.
