Writing For Podcasts
Learn what goes in to making a hit podcast and how to get started on your own!
This workshop will be suitable for anyone who is interested in the rise of podcasting as a storytelling medium. It will address the writing of single episodes and multi-part series from initial research through to the final editing process for publication. It will explore different genres of podcasting and the same/different writing principles that apply to each. The workshop will also cover techniques that are specific to podcasting, such as how to weave narrative into interview/research material to make for compelling listening.
Learning outcomes
As part of this workshop, you'll learn to:
Distinguish between the different genres of podcasts and how different writing principles apply to each.
Distinguish between techniques used in fiction/non-fiction prose vs script writing.
Investigate different ways of compiling research materials specific to each genre.
Understand plotting of podcast episodes from introduction to conclusion to create a compelling story arc (single and multi-part series.)
Create engaging prose that will intrigue listeners.
Understand common writing pitfalls specific to the podcast genre.
Format
This is a hybrid workshop with a focus on writing craft and audience engagement; it will be held in-person at State Library of Queensland and live streamed simultaneously to an online audience via Zoom.
About Jessica
Jessica Forsayeth is a full-time researcher and script writer employed by the Casefile True Crime podcast. In addition to writing episodes that vary in topic each week, Jessica also has experience with podcast series, where one topic is explored in greater detail over a number of episodes. She has experience in tutoring and running workshops from her previous career as a registered nurse.
