Screenwriting: From Premise to Pitch with Tristram Baumber

Develop your screen idea step by step into a script and pitch package.

This 6-week course takes writers through the full journey of developing a screen idea into a compelling script sample and pitch. Led by AACTA-nominated screenwriter, producer and director Tristram Baumber, participants will explore premise testing, story structure, scene work, rewriting and pitching, while also developing professional materials like loglines and pitch decks.

Each week combines practical craft lessons with guided feedback, building toward a final showcase pitch. Suitable for beginners and emerging screenwriters, the course is designed to be collaborative, industry-focused and directly applicable to participants’ own projects.

Learning outcomes

As part of this course, participants will:

  • Refine a story premise into a strong screen concept

  • Apply principles of story structure and screen “beats”

  • Write and workshop scenes with attention to screen storytelling craft

  • Practise rewriting techniques to sharpen dialogue and action

  • Develop a professional logline and short pitch

  • Present their project in a supportive, industry-style pitch environment

Format

This is a 6-part online course with a focus on craft and industry; it will be hosted via Zoom. This course is best suited for screenwriters of any level who have an idea they are ready to develop.

 

About Tristram

Tristram Baumber is an award-nominated screenwriter, producer and director with over a decade of experience in Australian television and film. He co-created and was showrunner for ABC’s The PM’s Daughter (twice AACTA-nominated), wrote for the new Mother and Son (AWGIE-nominated) and wrote/co-directed upcoming theatrical horror feature Site Unseen. His career spans comedy, drama and genre storytelling, with credits on series including TimothyThe Unlisted, Born to Spy and The Other Guy.
