Increase your descriptive repertoire, expand your visual vocabulary, and explore avenues for enriching your language.

Lyrical language can be one of the great pleasures of writing and reading. In this workshop, you will explore techniques for acquiring distinctive vocabularies, borrowing language from visual forms, honing aesthetics and theme, suggesting worlds in a few words, and sharpening your writing habits into editing strengths. Work through a sequences of exercises, build your own tools, and create a practice of stealing lyricism from all around you.

   

Learning outcomes

As part of this workshop, you will:

  • Explore descriptive techniques.

  • Analyse habits and develop strengths.

  • Acquire and build tools for lyrical writing.

 

Format

This is an in-person workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be held at State Library of Queensland. This workshop is suitable for writers of all levels and backgrounds.

 

About Kathleen

Kathleen Jennings is a British Fantasy Award-winning writer and World Fantasy Award-winning illustrator, based in Brisbane, Australia. She brings her expertise in both areas together to craft lyrical, illustrative writing. Her latest novel is Honeyeater (September 2025, Tor / Picador), and her debut collection Kindling is on the World Fantasy shortlist.
