Memoir is one of the most fascinating genres for readers and writers alike. We all have a story to tell, but how do we translate that story into an exciting narrative? This weekend bootcamp examines the fundamentals of memoir writing, giving you exercises and knowledge to evoke the places, people, and events of your memory in a compelling fashion.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this workshop, participants will know how to:
Understand the difference between the forms of memoir, biography, autobiography and fiction
Navigate the notion of 'truth' in memoir
Understand the notion of unreliable memory in memoir
Use imagination to build authenticity and trust
Use the 'dual timeline' and 'dual vantage point' in memoir
Develop a voice suited to their individual story
Make decisions on the role of the narrator
Format
This is a face-to-face weekend bootcamp with a focus on craft; it will be held in-person at Queensland Writers Centre. It is a level 2 course, for intermediate writers, but is suitable for writers of all levels.
About Kristina Olsson
Kristina Olsson is an award-winning writer of fiction, non-fiction and journalism. Her 2013 memoir, Boy, Lost, garnered multiple awards including the Queensland, New South Wales and West Australian Premiers awards for non-fiction and the Kibble Prize. Her most recent novel, Shell, launched the legendary Scribner Australia literary imprint and was shortlisted in several major literary awards.
Kristina’s previous work includes the novels The China Garden and In One Skin, and the biography Kilroy Was Here. She has also had a long career as a journalist, an advisor to government, and a teacher of creative writing.
