Writing Adaptations with Hilary Bell

Use the bones of myths and classics to create a fresh, original story for a novel, short story, play or screenplay.

Did you know that the film ‘Clueless’ is based on Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’, or that the ‘50s sci-fi ‘Forbidden Planet’ is inspired by Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’? Many classic tales provide the bones for original plays, films, novels and short stories. In this course, writers will take an archetypal story as their foundation, and through close analysis of its characters, stakes, emotions and atmosphere, create a fresh new story. Along the way, we’ll dig into the elements of storytelling through practical exercises.

‍ ‍
