Turning Your Life Into Art with Shelley Davidow

Your life is a unique story. But having a good story and telling a good story are two different things.

In this workshop, participants will learn some of the secrets to turning lived experience into a great read.

Award-winning author Shelley Davidow will show you how craft enables art in this hands-on course, illuminating how key life events represent themes that can form the backbone of your memoir.

Learning Outcomes

Through practical exercises and a workshop in the key areas listed below, writers can:

  • Discover life-themes to create plot

  • Uncover the essential elements of memoir

  • Learn the purpose and value of dialogue

  • Identify key things to avoid when writing memoir

  • Understand the ethical dilemmas that emerge when writing your ‘truth’

  • Learn how craft enables art

  • Turn memories into narratives

  • Learn how sometimes less is more

  • See life as a hero’s journey (you’re the hero)

Format

This is a face-to-face workshop with a focus on craft. It is a level 1 course, suitable for writers of all levels.

About Shelley

Shelley Davidow is the award-winning author of 45 books. Writing across genres, recent titles include Shadow Sisters (University of Queensland Press, 2018), Whisperings in the Blood (University of Queensland Press, 2016), Playing with Words (co-authored with Paul Williams; Palgrave Macmillan, UK, 2016), and Fail Brilliantly (Familius, USA, 2017). Her radical memoir ‘Runaways’ written with co-author and BBC journalist Shaimaa Khalil is forthcoming in 2022. Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Unless otherwise stated, Queensland Writers Centre workshops and events are suitable for participants aged 16 years and over. If you are under 18 years of age, please check with us for suitability before purchasing a ticket. 

Membership will be confirmed on arrival, in the event it isn't current, membership will need to be arranged.

 

What can I bring into the event?

You can bring either pen and paper or a laptop along with you to write with. If you do bring a laptop, please remember to bring a power adaptor if necessary. 

Will this event be live streamed?

Queensland Writers Centre aims to provide material to its membership regardless of where they reside within Queensland by live streaming some events. Attendees may be broadcast periodically throughout the event as recording takes place. If you wish not to be filmed, let staff know prior to the event.

What's the refund policy?

If Queensland Writers Centre cancels an event, we will try to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full. Except in special circumstances, if you cancel a booking for, or are unable to attend an event, workshop, seminar, or course, Queensland Writers Centre cannot provide a refund.
