Practical guidance on creating viable poetic ideas.

In this workshop, poet, fiction writer and editor Philip Neilsen will provide practical guidance on how to create viable ideas for poems. A range of types of poems will be explored, such as environmental, autobiographical and ekphrastic.

Well-crafted poems that make the best use of your ideas are more likely to assist you to publication.

 

Learning outcomes

  • Learn how to generate viable and rich ideas for poems.

  • Produce short drafts of new poetry.

  • Receive feedback on how to use fresh language and images to develop those ideas.

  

Format

This is an in-person workshop with a focus on craft; it will be held in-person at Queensland Writers Centre, State Library of Queensland. As a Level 2 workshop, it is suitable for committed writers of all levels.

  

About Philip

Philip is a leading Australian poet who has won various prizes including the Philip Bacon Ekphrastic Poetry Award. His most recent collection, Wildlife of Berlin was shortlisted for the 2019 Kenneth Slessor Prize in the NSW Premier’s Awards.

Since 2012 he has taught poetry writing at QUT and the University of Queensland. He has also published internationally on the therapeutic benefits of writing well-crafted poetry.
