A journey in data - this seminar will provide data-driven insights over the course of your first year in publishing.

Focussing on data/numbers and insights, Siang will guide participants through phases of the submissions and publishing process, including:

  • Pre-publication

    • agent submissions and best practices

    • publisher submissions and best practices

    • unpublished awards opportunities by the numbers

    • cover letter refinements

    • book cover design process

    • blurb request process

    • website design principles

    • affiliate links

  • Post-publication

    • sales correlations to publicity, festival appearances, adaptations, shortlsts, awards and more.

Learning Outcomes

As part of this seminar, you will:

  • Learn how to bring project, program and product management skills to your writing and publishing career

  • Use data to support/debunk long-standing myths in and about the publishing industry (local and US)

Format

This is a hybrid seminar with a focus on industry information; it will be held in-person at Queensland Writers Centre, State Library of Queensland, and live streamed simultaneously to an online audience via Zoom. As a Level 2 workshop, it is suitable for beginner and emerging writers.

About Siang

Siang Lu is the award-winning author of The Whitewash and the co-creator of The Beige Index.

He is the recipient of the 2021 Queensland Literary Awards Glendower Emerging Writer Award. His work has appeared in KYD, Southerly and Westerly. He has been a speaker at writers festivals around Australia, including Ubud Writers and Readers Festival Perth and Oz Asia Adelaide.
