Building a Readership Through Social Media - Stacey McEwan
Social media platforms can be lawless places. I can see you shuddering all the way over there. Is it not enough that you’re putting your art out into the world, open to public critique? Now you have to spruik your work on social media?
“Have mercy!” you say (or likely something much ruder).
No. Whether we love it or hate it, social media marketing is now a necessity in the publishing industry (trade or indie). It is a monster that must be faced. The good news is that many have slain this particular beast before you. As frustrating as it can be, it can also open a door to a slew of readers…your readers.
Just over a year ago, I was hesitating. I wanted to self-publish, but the odds were not in my favour. Self-publishing comes with a cost, one that has no guarantee of making any returns. Writing the book would take months of work, work that would yield no income if I couldn’t somehow pull it from the depths of Amazon obscurity. One day I opened Tiktok and Instagram, swallowed the dread, and thought, well, let’s see what happens.
A lot happened – the most important of which was that I found a readership.
I can’t wait to share this workshop, and all I’ve learnt since 2020, including:
The online bookish community
Practical advice for marketing yourself on social media
Finding a specific readership
Interacting with potential consumers online
Examples and ideas of social media marketing techniques
Tricks for creating engaging content
My aim is to give as much practical advice as I can. There is an entire army of readers who would devour your writing. The work lies in finding them.
Stacey McEwan is a school teacher by day and fantasy writer by night. She is a book influencer on multiple platforms and began writing Ledge after book lovers of the internet begged her to share her story ideas. Stacey lives on the Gold Coast, Australia with her husband, two children and one questionable dog. When Stacey isn’t writing, teaching, or making ridiculous TikToks, you’ll find her playing with her children, reading, annoying her husband, or possibly all three at once.
Join her in person at Queensland Writers Centre or via live stream this May for Building A Readership On Social Media - a deep dive into the power that social media has on the book market, and how anyone can use this to find and connect with their own audience.
